Moxie Provides Contextual Guidance for GDPR Compliance

With the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) set to take effect on May 25, 2018, business, technology and marketing leaders hopefully have at least a fundamental understanding of the sweeping new regulations that will profoundly impact organisations conducting commerce in the EU. But if you’re still a bit hazy on the details or are unsure of what exactly you need to be doing to ensure compliance and avoid potentially crippling fines, you’re not alone. Businesses around the world are working to fully understand and prepare for GDPR.

At Moxie, we’re hearing a lot of concern around one of the key components of GDPR: demonstrating that a customer has consented to the processing of his or her personal data. According to a recent survey conducted by Direct Marketing Association UK, consent is at the top of the list of concerns for marketers, far surpassing any other category related to the forthcoming regulation.

Moxie’s eCommerce solutions provide a quick and easy way to improve compliance in consent and other key areas of GDPR. Moxie solutions allow you to share vital information with your customers as they move through the online journey and be more transparent about the personal data you’re collecting.

GDPR: A Brief Recap

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve already immersed yourself in the provisions of GDPR—so, we’ll keep this section short. Designed to give EU consumers more control over their personal data, GDPR expands on regulations established under the 1995 Data Protection Directive by requiring companies to adhere to stringent guidelines around consent, access, correction and erasure of personal data. Companies that fail to comply with the new regulation, either through insufficient data-handling practices or unauthorized disclosures of personal data or other breaches may face significant fines—up to €20 million, or 4 percent of their global annual revenue (whichever is higher).

Assessing Your GDPR Compliance

As with any impending regulation, and especially one as unprecedented as GDPR, unknowns inevitably abound. What we do know is that the stakes are incredibly high and that time to prepare is running out, and that should be enough for any marketer to kick the compliance effort into high gear. Have you done a full audit of the data you collect and store on your customers? Have you conducted your data protection impact assessment?

Improving GDPR Compliance with Moxie

These are all critical questions we’ve had to ask ourselves, both as eCommerce professionals serving businesses around the world and as digital solutions providers who live and breathe the customer journey. As companies prepare for the GDPR requirements, we’ve examined how our customer engagement technologies—particularly, Moxie Concierge and our Kbot digital guidance application—can help our customers comply with aspects of GDPR by providing an interactive communication platform that spans the buyer’s full online journey.

How It Works

Because Moxie’s solutions can be customised according to the unique characteristics of each business and customer, the possibilities are actually quite vast. Using Moxie Concierge, companies can provide proactive, contextual disclosures relating to key components of GDPR to guide visitors through the consent process (e.g., strategically placed popups explaining why you’re asking for certain information and how it will be kept safe).

Kbot, the contextual cornerstone of Moxie Concierge, provides customers with virtual, timely assistance as they move through the online journey. Depending on the rules you set, Kbot can do things like redirect to a page that explains GDPR or lead to an opt-in page as a welcome message once a person enters the site.

Additional Note on Moxie’s GDPR Compliance

They can also request corrections be made on that information. If a visitor objects any data collection, you can easily generate guidance for the opt-in process at crucial times in the online purchasing journey before any data collection has occurred.
